“WHERE DID they go?” Ryan went into the living room to check for Blake and Bianca. Brunch had stretched into dinner, and to maintain their buzzes, mimosas had been upgraded to screwdrivers—which was an interesting combination with the pizza and chips they’d had for dinner. They might have done better with beer.
“Bianca wanted to show Blake something? I don’t know.” Matt sounded resigned, like there were things he had decided it was best not to ask about. “Hey, but I wanted to ask you something.”
“Yeah?”
Matt took a seat on the couch and gestured for Ryan to sit. He leaned forward, his expression earnest, and Ryan wondered how drunk he was. With Matt, it was almost impossible to tell. “So, I know I gave you a hard time about Blake—”
“It’s fine,” Ryan said, but Matt shushed him.
“You’re my best friend, and you do really dumb shit so often it’s like performance art at this point. But I do love you and that’s not going to change, you know?”
“Us being best friends?” Ryan guessed, though he could’ve easily meant he expected Ryan to continue to make bad choices. That would’ve been a less heartwarming conversation, though.
“Yeah. So, if you’re worried or whatever, don’t be.”
Ryan shook his head. “Why would you think I was worried?”
“Blake mentioned that you might be, with everything and his sister. But it’s cool. We’re cool, okay?”
“Thanks, buddy. That means a lot.” Ryan patted Matt’s knee. “And I know. I mean, I know we can screw up with each other and still be friends. That’s not something I’m worried about. But thanks.”
Matt nodded. “Good to know. Good to know.”
“How drunk are you?”
“More than I thought,” Matt admitted as Blake and Bianca came back into the room.
They’d been laughing about something. Both were still grinning like crazy. Blake’s cheeks were pink from the alcohol, and he looked happy and relaxed. For some reason, in the wake of his conversation with Matt, it bothered Ryan.
“You ready to go?” he asked, and Blake nodded.
Blake kissed Bianca’s cheek and shook Matt’s hand. “Thanks again for having us over. This was really fun.” He sounded genuinely pleased by it, and Ryan’s smile felt forced as he made his own good-byes.
The clouds from earlier had cleared away, making the temperature drop significantly, so Ryan shoved his hands in his pockets and was surprised when Blake linked his arm through his, drunkenly affectionate.
“I think that went well.”
It was cold enough that they could see their breath, and Ryan watched the mist from Blake’s words swirl up and disappear into the night. Why was he so annoyed? Was it just because Matt and Blake were talking about him behind his back? Or because Blake had shared something Ryan had told him confidentially?
“Don’t you?” Blake asked when Ryan didn’t answer.
“For the most part.” As they got to the door, Ryan untangled their arms under the pretense of searching for his keys. “Hey, sweetheart,” he said as he opened the door, pushing Lady Sif back with his foot. He flipped on the light, shed his coat, and hung it on the hall rack.
